How usage based
packages work
Traditionally, when
Broadband was first introduced in the UK, the vast majority of
ISP's offered completely unlimited tariff's, but as new
technology was introduced lines became faster and more
downloadable content was made readily available. As downloads
soared, the industry completely shifted to usage based packages
following many European countries.
Our peak hours are between 8:01am and 9:59pm daily, with
off-peak being from 10pm through till 8am.
What
is 'up to 8mb' and how fast will my line be?
Classic Broadband
offered fixed rate speeds of 512k, 1mb & 2mb where as 'up to 8mb
MAX' will enable your line to the fastest speed available
subject to the conditions of your telephone line. The distance
from your exchange will also have a big impact on the speed you
can receive.
You can run a line
test to determine how fast your line may be able to handle
however this can vary depending on the time of day and various
other factors.
Up to 8mb MAX
Broadband uses a rate adaptive technology which works different
to classic fixed rate Broadband. Your modem will remain in sync
with the BT Telephone Exchange and constantly agree a suitable
speed with the DSLAM at the exchange. If any line errors are
reported, the system will reduce your speed until there are no
problems.
Can I have a fixed
rate service if I prefer?
Sure! We find that the small majority of customers (particularly
those quite far from the exchange) may achieve a better speed
using a fixed rate service of either 512k, 1mb or 2mb. If you
would prefer fixed rate, please contact us to discuss a suitable
speed.
